Working Fluids – Isopentane and n-Pentane

The geothermal dual flow power generation system is a kind of power generation system which uses low boiling point medium as the working medium to drive the turbine. So far, it can make the medium and low temperature geothermal fluid which is difficult to use for power generation. In March 2006, the operation test of the machine began. After the Junyuan’s Isopentane is heated in the preheater, it changes from liquid to gas (Isopentane steam) in the evaporator and enters the turbine to make the generator rotate and generate electricity.

At the end of power generation, the Isopentane flowing out of the turbine is cooled and liquefied in the air-cooled condenser, and then sent to the preheater by the medium circulating pump. The Isopentane system is a closed cycle system, which will not be discharged into the atmosphere due to its recyclability. The geothermal dual flow cycle power generation system uses Isopentane from Junyuan to promote and expand the utilization of geothermal energy in Japan and around the world.

Energy from the geothermal fluid is transferred to isopentane on the tube side of the heat exchanger to power a two-stage steam turbine with a direct-connected generator turning at 1,800 rpm. In other words, it’s a typical Rankine cycle. Isopentane is used because it vaporizes at lower temperatures and higher pressures than water, making it an ideal working fluid for recovering energy from low-temperature geothermal fluids . The vaporous isopentane is condensed and heat is rejected through a conventional four-cell cooling tower.

Organic power. Ormat supplied the organic Rankine cycle that uses the geothermal resource to produce electrical power. The working fluid is isopentane.

Pentanes Used For Geothermal Power Plants

Processes and applications
Binary Cycle Geothermal Plant Organic Rankine or Kalina Cycle
Binary cycle processes are quite frequent nowadays to make use of the medium enthalpy hydrothermal resources available in the underground. A secondary working fluid having a flashing point at much lower temperature is heated-up by the hydrothermal resource and then expanded in a thermal turbine to drive an electric generator.

Binary Cycle Geothermal Plant Organic Rankine or Kalina Cycle
A binary cycle plant transfers heat from the hot geothermal fluid (105°C < T < 185°C) that is sent through a heat exchanger to vaporize a secondary working fluid such as pentane, iso-butane in the Organic Rankine Cycle, or ammonia in the Kalina Cycle. The working fluid is then expanded in a turbine, condensed and reheated in a closed loop cycle. The brine is disposed of by re-injection into the ground. The system supports these processes with Production pumps (PP), Brine Re-Injection pumps (BRIP), Hydrocarbon Feed pumps (HFP), Cooling Water pumps (CWP) and auxiliary pumps.

A simple Kalina cycle includes a waste heat recovery vapor generator, a turbine, and the distillation condensation system. In the distillation condensation subsystem, first the flow incoming from the turbine is cooled by the heater (recuperator), and then the stream is mixed with a lean solution of ammonia to increase the condensation temperature of the working fluid.

The Kalina cycle is a modified Rankine cycle involving mixtures of ammonia and water of varying concentration, that offers higher performance for temperatures between 200 and 300 °C. It is being pursued commercially and also targeted at geothermal power applications.

Applications
·Pentanes are some of the primary blowing agents used in the production of polystyrene foam and other foams. Usually, a mixture of n-, i-, and increasingly cyclopentane is used for this purpose.
·Because of its low boiling point, low cost, and relative safety, pentane is used as a working medium in geothermal power stations. It is added into some refrigerant blends as well.
·Pentanes are also used as an active ingredient in some pesticides.

Isohexane, 99%

Hexane has been used for decades to extract edible oil from cottonseed. However, due to increased regulations affecting hexane because of the 1990 Clean Air Act and potential health risks, the oil-extraction industry urgently needs alternative hydrocarbon solvents to replace hexane. Five solvents,n-heptane, isohexane, neohexane, cyclohexane, and cylopentane, were compared with commercial hexane using a benchscale extractor. The extractions were done with a solvent to cottonseed flake ratio of 5.5 to 1 (w/w) and a miscella recycle flow rate of 36 mL/min/sq cm (9 gal/min/sq ft) at a temperature of 10 to 45°C below the boiling point of the solvent. After a 10-min single-stage extraction, commercial hexane removed 100% of the oil from the flakes at 55°C; heptane extracted 100% at 75°C and 95.9% at 55°C; isohexane extracted 93.1% at 45°C; while cyclopentane, cyclohexane, and neohexane removed 93.3, 89.4, and 89.6% at 35, 55, and 35°C, respectively. Each solvent removed gossypol from cottonseed flakes at a different rate, with cyclopentane being most and neohexane least effective. Based on the bench-scale extraction results and the availability of these candidate solvents, heptane and isohexane are the alternative hydrocarbon solvents most likely to replace hexane.

The Hexane Market is Segmented by Type (n-Hexane, Isohexane, Neohexane), Grade (Polymer Grade, Food Grade, Other Grades), Application (Industrial Solvents, Edible Oil Extractant, Adhesives and Sealants, Paints and Coatings, Other Applications), and Geography (Asia-Pacific, North America, Europe, South America, and Middle East & Africa).

Edible Oil Extraction to Dominate the Market

  • Hexane is increasingly being used as a solvent to extract edible oils from seed and vegetable crops, e.g., peanuts, soybeans, corn, etc.
  • Hexane has a greater ability to extract oil, compared to other solvents, like petroleum ether and ethyl acetate. It easily mixes with vegetable oil and washes it out without disturbing fiber, protein, sugar, and undesired gums.
  • Growth in the edible oil segment can be attributed to the rising awareness among consumers about the use of refined oil and the impact it has on health.
  • According to the United States Department of Agriculture, the consumption of edible oils like soybean oil, in 2019, in the United States, was 10,659 metric ton and canola oil was 2,465 metric ton. Moreover, according to the Department for Promotion of Industry & Internal Trade, in India, the investment value in the vegetable oil sector, in 2019, was around INR 18 billion.
  • Additionally, the consumers are inclined to pay higher prices for healthy food products, owing to the increasing food-based health challenges, such as high cholesterol, obesity, etc.
  • The growing popularity of edible oils with added health benefits in many countries is shaping the purchase decisions of edible oils, which are high in omega 3, vitamins, oryzanol, natural antioxidants, and others. Thus, exhibiting the likely demand for edible oils in the forthcoming years.

Use of leaching solvent in preparing edible fat and oil

A leaching solvent used for preparing edible oils is characterized in that the solvent is applied to the leaching process of edible oil preparation so as to leach oil from materials. The solvent consists of the following components by weight ratio: 94 to 100 percent of isohexane, 0 to 3 percent of normal hexane and 0 to 3 percent of butane and pentane; the leaching process includes the following steps of: 1) leaching: the leaching temperature is 48 to 53 DEG C and a mass ratio between the materials and solvent is 1/1 to 0.8; mixed oil and leached wet meal are obtained; 2) desolventizing: the finished meal is obtained; 3) the evaporation of a first long-tube; 4) the evaporation of a second long-tube; mixed oil is obtained; and 5) steam stripping: raw oil is obtained. The solvent of the invention is mainly composed of isohexane so as to largely reduce the harm to the health of operators exposed in the manufacturing environment; the product quality can be enhanced and the protection to environment can be enhanced; the latent heat for the evaporation of isohexane is low and then the energy cost required by the solvent recycling can be effectively reduced.

Corn oil (maize oil) is oil extracted from the germ of corn (maize). Its main use is in cooking, where its high smoke point makes refined corn oil a valuable frying oil. It is also a key ingredient in some margarines. Corn oil is generally less expensive than most other types of vegetable oils.

Corn oil is also a feedstock used for biodiesel. Other industrial uses for corn oil include soap, salve, paint, erasers, rustproofing for metal surfaces, inks, textiles, nitroglycerin, and insecticides. It is sometimes used as a carrier for drug molecules in pharmaceutical preparations.

Global n-Hexane market dynamics

Demand for n-Hexane, especially in developing region such Asia Pacific, is expected to boost the demand of the global n-Hexane market over the forecast period. Excellent properties of n-Hexane to remove odor and unwanted taste are expected to propel the demand of n-Hexane from the edible oil industry. n-Hexane has the ability to remove unwanted taste and odor and this is the precise reason that the demand for n-Hexane has increased in edible oil industry. However, the consumers from developed regions are shifting from refined oil to cold-pressed oil owing to its superior health benefits. Cold pressing is a natural way to produce oil which does not contain solvent residues, no preservatives with natural antioxidants. In addition, Isohexane, a hexane isomer is used as a substitute of n-Hexane in few oilseed extraction applications. Due to toxic nature of n-Hexane, it has been substituted by n-heptane in some pharmaceutical applications. This may retard the growth of the n-Hexane market.

Almost all corn oil is expeller-pressed, then solvent-extracted using hexane or 2-methylpentane (isohexane). The solvent is evaporated from the corn oil, recovered, and re-used. After extraction, the corn oil is then refined by degumming and/or alkali treatment, both of which remove phosphatides. Alkali treatment also neutralizes free fatty acids and removes color (bleaching). Final steps in refining include winterization (the removal of waxes), and deodorization by steam distillation of the oil at 232–260 °C (450–500 °F) under a high vacuum.

Some specialty oil producers manufacture unrefined, 100%-expeller-pressed corn oil. This is a more expensive product since it has a much lower yield than the combination expeller and solvent process, as well as a smaller market share.

Hexane in Solvent extraction methodHexane in its pure form is a colorless liquid , and its boiling point is between 50℃ – 70℃ all of which work in favor for oil extractionTo begin the process of solvent extractionoil seeds (soybeanrapeseed etc.) are removed of impurities and dried to reduce moisture content.

What is the difference between hexane and solvent extraction?The oil content in the flakes after removes by solvent extraction method is only 1/2% which is far less when compared to other methods of extraction which may range anywhere between 30- 45%. The Solvent extraction process scores over the other two methods by the following advantages Why hexane for oil extraction and not other solvents?

How do you separate hexane from oil?Oil and solvent are separated by distillation. The hexane process increases oil removal efficiency in a strictly cold-pressed process.

Does oil dissolve in hexane?Gasoline effectively dissolves oils and even grease. Hexane, isolated from other gasoline components, serves as a solvent for vegetable oils, such as peanut oil and soybean oil.

How much Hexane is in cooking oil?It has been estimated that refined vegetable oils extracted with hexane contain approximately 0.8 milligrams of residual hexane per kilogram of oil (0.8 ppm).

Which solvent is best for oil extraction?hexaneGenerally, hexane is the most commonly used solvent for the extraction of oils from plant sources due to its low boiling temperature and easy recovery from the extract, and since most oils are soluble in hexane.

Why hexane is used in oil extraction?Hexane has been widely used for oil extraction because of easy oil recovery, narrow boiling point (63–69 °C) and excellent solubilizing ability. In contrary, while in extraction and recovery processes, hexane is released into the environment that react with the pollutants to form ozone and photo chemicals.

Is hexane used in olive oil extraction? Olive oil extraction is the process of extracting the oil present in olive drupes, known as olive oil. This contrasts with other oils that are extracted with chemical solvents, generally hexane.

What is Isopentane?

Isopentane is an organic compound with a variety of uses, ranging from being an ingredient in cosmetics to being a component in a type of geothermal power plant. This solvent is extremely flammable. Its tendency to evaporate makes it useful for dissolving compounds, since it is easily evaporated away. This chemical smells like gasoline and does not dissolve in water, but floats on top of it. It is considered harmful to the environment.

Also known as methylbutane, this compound has a formula of C5H12. It is known as a hydrocarbon, since it contains only carbon and hydrogen atoms. The structure of this compound is CH3CHCH2CH3, with a methyl — CH3 — group attached to the second carbon. Pentane has the same formula, but has a structure of CH3CH2CH2CH2CH3 with no branching. These two compounds are known as structural isomers.

This branching lowers the boiling point of isopentane, compared to pentane. Its boiling point is only 103°F (27.9°C). The flash point of this compound is relatively high, at -68°F (-55°C). This combination of characteristics is responsible for the extreme flammability of the chemical. If there is a fire, one should not spray water on it. That can result in the compound floating to the top of the water, and possibly catching fire again.

Mixed with other compounds, however, isopentane can be quite stable. It is often used in a range of cosmetics, including shaving gel, body wash, and specific types of toothpaste. The manufacture of insulation is another use for this compound.

In laboratories, isopentane is used to make a bath in liquid nitrogen. It is quite common to prepare tissues for storage at -94°F (-70°C) by immersing them in liquid nitrogen. This process of flash freezing preserves such biological samples.

A container of isopentane can be put into a larger container of liquid nitrogen. When the solvent becomes cloudy, it is near freezing. It is then removed from the liquid nitrogen and used to freeze the specimen. It is important to let the solvent evaporate before the sample is stored in a freezer.

Another use of isopentane is in a type of geothermal plant known as a binary cycle power plant. Geothermal plants tap into heat energy deep in the earth and convert it to electricity. This kind of geothermal plant can use cooler reservoirs than other types. This is because the hot water from the geothermal energy heats liquid isopentane and turns it into a gas. This gas then drives a turbine and generator to generate the power plant’s electricity.

The density of isopentane is 0.616 g/ml. Its molecular weight is 72.15 g/mol. It is important to remember that this compound is classified as a lung, skin, and eye irritant.

What are the different types of geothermal power plants?

There are three types of geothermal power plants: dry steam, flash steam, and binary cycle. Dry steam power plants draw from underground resources of steam. The steam is piped directly from underground wells to the power plant, where it is directed into a turbine/generator unit.

How does binary cycle work in a geothermal power plant?

With binary cycle geothermal power plants, pumps are used to pump hot water from a geothermal well, through a heat exchanger, and the cooled water is returned to the underground reservoir. … The vapor exiting the turbine is then condensed by cold air radiators or cold water and cycled back through the heat exchanger.

How much power can a geothermal plant produce?Geothermal Power Plants are Compact

power plant that can generate 1 gigawatt (1,000 megawatts) per hour of electricity would take up a good deal of space.

What are the 3 ways to get geothermal energy?
Some applications of geothermal energy use the earth’s temperatures near the surface, while others require drilling miles into the earth. There are three main types of geothermal energy systems: Direct use and district heating systems. Geothermal power plants.

Which kind of geothermal plant is most common type?

Flash steam plantsFlash steam plants are the most common type of geothermal power generation plants in operation today.

How efficient is geothermal power?
The conversion efficiency of geothermal power developments is generally lower than that of all conventional thermal power plants. The highest reported conversion efficiency is approximately 21% at the Darajat vapour-dominated system, with a worldwide efficiency average of around 12%.

What are the disadvantages of geothermal energy?
Disadvantages of Geothermal Energy

  • Geothermal energy has high initial capital costs.
  • May release harmful gases.
  • Suited to a particular region.
  • Geothermal heat pumps have to be powered.
  • Geothermal sites may experience a dry spell.
  • Sustainability issues.
  • Can cause surface instability.
  • Extremely high temperatures required.

Top countries producing geothermal power

  • US. With an installed capacity of 3,639MW in 2018, the US is the leading producer of geothermal energy across the world, producing 16.7 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) of geothermal energy throughout the year.
  • Indonesia.
  • Philippines.
  • Turkey.
  • New Zealand.
  • Mexico.
  • Italy.
  • Iceland.

Can geothermal produce electricity?
Geothermal energy can heat, cool, and generate electricityGeothermal energy can be used in different ways depending on the resource and technology chosen—heating and cooling buildings through geothermal heat pumps, generating electricity through geothermal power plants, and heating structures through direct-use.

How long do geothermal power plants last?
Geothermal systems are built to last a very long time. “The indoor components typically last about 25 years (compared with 15 years or less for a furnace or conventional AC unit) and more than 50 years for the ground loop,” The Family Handyman magazine reports.

What is one drawback of drilling geothermal wells?

The disadvantages of geothermal energy are mainly high initial capital costs. The cost of drilling wells to the geothermal reservoir is quite expensive. Taking into account the cost of heating and cooling system installation thereby surging extra costs.

How long does it take to build a geothermal plant?
Around two years. The geothermal project that started with only heating, such as Nesjavellir and Svartsengi, constructed within two years. Heating power plants are simpler and do not have the same long lead items as power producing plants and can therefore be assumed to take less time for the construction phase, around two years.

Why geothermal energy is bad?

Geothermal plants can release small amounts of greenhouse gases such as hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide. Water that flows through underground reservoirs can pick up trace amounts of toxic elements such as arsenic, mercury, and selenium.

How deep do you have to dig for geothermal energy?

For a horizontal loop you only need to dig between 6 – 8 feet deep. For a vertical loop you need to drill between 250 and 300 feet deep.

Does Geothermal cool your house?

When it comes to efficiency, geothermal AC beats conventional central AC by far. As you can imagine, your geothermal heat pump will always be effective and efficient at cooling your home, even in the hottest summers. Installing a geothermal air conditioner can reduce your electricity use by 25 to 50 percent!

Who uses geothermal energy the most?

The United StatesGeothermal energy is generated in over 20 countries. The United States is the world’s largest producer, and the largest geothermal development in the world is The Geysers north of San Francisco in California. In Iceland, many of the buildings and even swimming pools are heated with geothermal hot water.

What are the basic parts of a geothermal plant to produce electricity?

The Turbine Drives the Electric Generator

Rotational energy from the turning turbine shaft is used directly to spin magnets inside a large coil and create electrical current. The turbine and generator are the primary pieces of equipment used to convert geothermal energy to electrical energy.

How much does geothermal energy cost per month?
This means that when he first installed his system, he was likely saving a small amount of money on his heating when compared with his propane bill. The homeowner said he was paying $150/month for propane, and if we deduce the average geothermal kWh use it would be around $138/month, a savings of $12/month.

How much does it cost to install a geothermal heating system?
On an average, a homeowner can expect to invest about $12,000 to $30,000 as geothermal heating and cooling cost. This cost would cover a complete geothermal installation. For large homes, the cost can range from $30,000 to $45,000 for high end ground source heat pump systems.

How warm does geothermal heating get?

Geothermal heat pumps can operate in any climate—hot or cold—because of the earth’s constant underground temperature (from 45° to 75° F depending on location). In fact, millions of GHP systems are already heating and cooling homes and businesses worldwide, and that includes all 50 U.S. states.

Is a geothermal system worth it?
geothermal heat pump can save you so much money in energy costs (while helping the environment) that you may be tempted to install one immediately. However, a geothermal heat pump is so expensive to install that you may be tempted to forget the whole thing.

Can you put geothermal in an existing home?
In a home with an existing forced-air system powered by propane, heating oil or natural gas, a geothermal system can use existing ductwork and mechanical spaces. If the existing furnace or boiler in a home is 20 years old or more, it may make sense to replace it with a geothermal system.

What is better solar or geothermal?
Climate will also dictate whether geothermal is a better option as the farther North you move, the more heat is needed during the winters. Because geothermal energy provides up to 500% efficiency compared to gas or oil heating, it’s highly recommended over solar power in colder areas.

What is the largest geothermal power plant in the world?
Geysers Geothermal ComplexThe Geysers Geothermal Complex, California, US – 1.2GW

The Geysers Geothermal Complex located 121km north of San Francisco, California, is comprised of 15 power plants making it the biggest geothermal installation in the world. The complex has an installed capacity of 1,205MW.

Who is the largest producer of geothermal energy in the world?Larderello Geothermal Complex, Italy

This complex is responsible for 10% of all geothermal energy that is produced worldwide, and is utilized for almost 27% of the power demands of the region.

What is the current status of geothermal energy in India?
The estimated potential for geothermal energy in India is about 10000 MW. There are seven geothermal provinces in India : the Himalayas, Sohana, West coast, Cambay, Son-Narmada-Tapi (SONATA), Godavari, and Mahanadi.

Geothermal Energy Pros and Cons

Instead of using natural gas or oil and as an alternative to incurring high electricity bills, geothermal energy works to draw off the Earth’s constant core temperature to both heat and cool the home. At first glance, incorporating geothermal energy into a house or business would seem like a no-brainer and while there are definite cost and economic savings involved with the process, all that glitters isn’t gold. Here are the definitive geothermal energy pros and cons:

ProsCons
Environmentally friendly compared to gas or oil furnaces (no combustion).High upfront costs with implementing geothermal energy. ($10,000-$20,000)
Not a significant source of pollution.More suitable for new home builds as retrofitting involves large scale excavation.
Efficient (300- 500% compared to 90% of the best furnaces).Electricity is still needed to operate heat pumps.
Geothermal energy is a renewable resource as long as the Earth exists.Geothermal energy using wells requires an incredible usage of water.
Suitable for the smallest of houses to the largest commercial spaces.Discharge into the Earth could include sulfur dioxide and silica (well pumps).
No cost fluctuations determined by gas and oil prices.Fewer installers than standard HVAC and thus less competition.
30%-60% savings on heating and 25%-50% savings on cooling.Large scale geothermal power plants are dangerous to the Earth’s surface and location-centric.
Moving heat that already exists opposed to making new heat.Damage to underground loops (tree roots, rodents, etc.) can be difficult and costly to repair.
Mostly underground for a minimal landscape footprint.
Not weather dependent like solar or wind power; geothermal heat pumps work year-round.
Heating systems won’t dangerously turn off when out of gas or oil like standard furnaces.
Installation is eligible for tax cuts.
Quieter operation because of no outdoor compressor or fan.
Long lifespan (25 years for indoor components, 50+ for underground loop system).
Fewer moving parts mean minimal maintenance issues.
Smallest carbon footprint of any heating or cooling source.
Technology behind geothermal energy will only continue to improve in efficiency.
Provides either base load or peak power energy output.

All-in-all, there are plenty of benefits as well as some downfalls of integrating geothermal energy into your commercial or residential property. It’s highly unlikely that geothermal energy will become irrelevant or impossible. It will remain as a nice implementation if it fits your landscape, location, and budget.

Exergy’s Denizli Tosumlar ORC geothermal plant in Turkey wins top plant award

The Denizli Tosunlar ORC geothermal power plant in Turkey received the Top Plant award in the Renewable energy project domain. Italian company Exergy S.p.A. built it for its client Akça Enerji in 2015.

The Power Magazine awarded the Denizli Tosunlar ORC geothermal plant as a part of its “Power Awards” competition, and announced its decision in the December issue of the magazine. A jury comprised of the U.S.-based magazine’s editors selected this 4 MW facility as the best in the Renewable projects category. Other categories include Natural gas-fired, Coal-fired, and Nuclear projects. The winner in each of the category was chosen for demonstrating an innovative design and engineering upgrades, for producing power more reliably or economically than comparable plants or demonstrating a new generation or environmental controls technology.

The Turkish branch of Exergy built this organic Rankine cycle (ORC) geothermal plant for its client Akça Enerji. It is the world’s first geothermal power plant with two-pressure-level cycle on a single-disk turbine. The Denizli Tosunlar has been operational since June 2015. It has already received an award in February 2016 – the key European Geothermal Innovation Award from the European Geothermal Energy Council for innovation demonstrated in this geothermal plant.

“We are very proud to have received a second award this year for our Denizli Tosunlar power plant. This repeated recognition gives evidence of the technological breakthrough this plant represents and rewards the commitment and the effort that Exergy put into R&D activities to keep us at the forefront of innovation by achieving new, smarter and more efficient applications of our technology. We are constantly working on further advances in technology for the ORC market in order continue to evolve and sustain clean power generation,” said Claudio Spadacini, chief executive officer of Exergy, which appear to have achieved considerable success in Turkey in the last several years.

Organic Rankine cycle usually uses low boiling point organic working fluids, such as atmospheric ethane, n-Pentane and Isopentane, etc. the medium and low-temperature geothermal fluid is used to exchange heat with low boiling point organic working fluid to make the latter evaporate and generate steam with high pressure to drive steam turbine to do power generation.
