These are acyclic branched or unbranched hydrocarbons having the general formula CnH2n+2 , and therefore consisting entirely of hydrogen atoms and saturated carbon atoms. Heptane is a flammable, volatile, organic, straight-chain alkane of seven carbon atoms. Available in a range of quantities, purities, and reagent grades, heptane is a commonly used non-polar solvent and a key component in gasoline.
