Sodium methoxide commonly known as sodium methylate, is created by an exothermal reaction between the molecules of sodium and methanol, it has white to pale yellow powder like appearance, it is odorless and at the same time flammable but not explosive. Its molecular formula is CH3ONa. Sodium methylate is a white amorphous powder. It reacts with water to form sodium hydroxide, a corrosive material, and methyl alcohol, a flammable liquid. The heat from this reaction may be sufficient to ignite surrounding combustible material or the sodium methylate itself if the water is present in only small amounts. The liquid is methanol solution of sodium methanolate and the content of sodium methylate is 27.5% to 31%. Liquid sodium methanolate is colorless or slightly yellow viscous liquid. It is sensitive to oxygen. It is flammable, explosive and easily hygroscopic.
Sodium methylate is used in multiple products the primary use of this product can be seen in biodiesel. Apart from biodiesel, it is also used in pharmaceutical, agrochemical, plastic and polymers, personal care industries and analytical reagent. The main reason for its usage in so many sectors is due to its unique quality of acting as a catalyst. Thus it makes its importance known in many industries. Sodium methylate, Sodium methoxide, Sodium methanolate. Empirical Formula (Hill Notation): CH3NaO. CAS Number: 124-41-4. Molecular Weight: 54.02. MDL number: MFCD00012179.
Sodium methyl is used as a catalyst, this quality of sodium methyl makes it adaptable in most of the industry.Sodium methyl’s usage in the production of biodiesel has increased its demand, biodiesel being an eco-friendly product makes it an eye-catcher for the government bodies. Sodium methylate is used as a catalyst in the production of biodiesel. The key advantage of sodium methylate is its virtually water-free character of the catalyst solution, which leads to low purification cost, high yield, and consistent biodiesel quality. Thus, the government also takes initiatives to help these industries, thus helping the sodium methyl market to grow. Also, the usage of sodium methyl as a catalyst in edible oil processing, synthetic detergent and grease will also help with the growth of this industry. Another reason for its increase will be the reducing usage of mercury. As nowadays people are looking for alternatives of mercury and sodium methyl hits the spot being a perfect substitute for mercury.
The main shortcoming for sodium methylate is that the raw materials are costly, thus making its production very expensive and also acting as an impediment to growth for sodium methylate market.
One of the significant areas for the sodium methyl market is the Asia Pacific, where in particular China is a dominant market for this chemical. China is the largest producer and consumer of sodium methylate. Indian and Japan are right behind China for sodium methylate market. Asia Pacific is said to have a positive CAGR for the forecasted period as there is an increase in the demand for chemical and pharmaceutical Industries. Europe follows North America regarding consumption of sodium methylate as there is grand capacity for biofuels in the developed countries of this region. The increasing demand for biofuels has drastically increased the demand for sodium methylate. Europe government has taken initiatives and has encouraged the use of biofuels in its countries, thus increasing the demand for sodium methylate.
Junyuan Petroleum Group has completed a significant capacity expansion of its sodium methylate production facility located in Dushanzi Economic and Technology Development Zone, Kuitun, Dushanzi, Xinjiang Province. Xinjiang branch of Junyuan Petroleum Group is located in the national fine chemical industry cluster, covering an area of 60,000 square meters, with obvious geographical advantages and convenient transportation. Xinjiang branch of Junyuan Petroleum Group is a comprehensive chemical enterprise integrating scientific research, production and sales; Junyuan Petroleum Group (Xinjiang) has 120 employees, including 1 national registered chemical expert, 2 senior engineers, 1 master and 6 undergraduates. Most of the other employees have college degrees or above and have strong technical force. At present, the company has five sets of liquid sodium methoxide devices, with an annual output of 560,000 tons of liquid sodium methoxide and methanol; Two sets of solid sodium methoxide units with an annual output of 20,000 tons of high-purity solid sodium methoxide. Phase II will build an annual output of 200,000 tons of formaldehyde and 100,000 tons of urea formaldehyde resin plant.
